How to Qualify
A Homestead Exemption is a tax break offered to homeowners on their primary residence. The exemption is applied toward your property tax bill for the current calendar year, which is typically sent out in August.
You must:
1. Own and reside in the home as of January 1st of the current calendar year
2. Use the property as your primary residence
To apply, you must complete an application from your county’s website and send in the supporting documentation by April 1st to be eligible for this year.
Some of the documents your city or county may require include: proof of residence, social security number, copy of your driver’s license, Warranty Deed book and page, and car tag information.
If you fail to apply by the April 1st deadline, you will lose your exemption for this year and will have to wait to apply until next year.
If you’ve applied for this exemption in the past and it’s reflected on your property tax bill, you shouldn’t have to apply again. Once the exemption is associated with your account, it will appear on your tax bill.
